There are direct flights from many European cities such as Lisbon, Frankfurt, London and Paris. The flight time from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada is approximately two hours.

This is the only international airport on São Miguel, located in the capital, Ponta Delgada. The airport connects the island to several European cities as well as other Azorean islands. Regular flights from Lisbon, Porto, and Madeira are operated by airlines such as SATA and TAP Portugal.

Overview

The Azores consist of nine islands, divided into three groups: the eastern group (São Miguel, Santa Maria), the central group (Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial), and the western group (Flores, Corvo). The main island is São Miguel, home to the largest city in the Azores, Ponta Delgada.

We will be staying on São Miguel the entire time. It’s best if you book your accommodation in the capital, Ponta Delgada, as we will be dining there in the evenings and the conference day will also take place there.

The official Heuereka only starts in the evening. However, since some of you are arriving earlier, we would like to offer you this opportunity to spend the day together and explore the island.

Full Day Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo  

Meeting point at the hotel Grand Hotel Azores Atlantico (Besaude Hotel Collection) at 9 AM.

Departure from the hotel and drive to the western part of the island to Vista do Rei, a famous viewpoint offering a stunning view of the Sete Cidades crater, the lake, and the village below. Descend into the crater for a short stop in the village before continuing along the scenic northwest coast, passing through small villages such as Ajuda da Bretanha, Santa Bárbara, Santo António, and Capelas. In Capelas, visit the Oficina Museu, a private museum that recreates traditional craft workshops such as a barber, photographer, printer, and shoemaker. The journey continues to Restaurante Caldeiras near Ribeira Grande for a regional lunch. The restaurant is located next to the Caldeiras da Ribeira Grandethermal baths, a 19th-century thermal complex set in a lush valley. After lunch, visit Caldeira Velha da Ribeira Grandeto explore the natural gardens and thermal pools (no swimming). Then, drive up to 900 meters altitude for a breathtaking view of Lagoa do Fogo, a pristine volcanic lake. The day concludes with a visit to a pineapple plantation, including a tour of its greenhouses.

On Friday, August 22th
On this day, we will all go on an excursion together. We will be transported in multiple buses to beautiful viewpoints and activities.

Full Day Furnas   

Meeting point at the hotel Grand Hotel Azores Atlantico (Besaude Hotel Collection) at 9 AM.

Enjoy a scenic drive along the south coast to Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s first capital until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1522. Take a short stroll through the village and try the famous Queijadas da Vila pastries before continuing to Furnas Valley, a historically active volcanic area with hot springs and fumaroles.
At Lagoa das Furnas, witness the traditional cooking of Cozido das Caldeiras, a stew of mixed meats and vegetables slow-cooked using volcanic heat. This will be served for lunch at Terra Nostra’s Casino, accompanied by a curated wine selection.
In the afternoon, explore the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, where you can walk through the park or take a swim in the naturally heated thermal pool. The return journey to Ponta Delgada follows the northern route, with stops at the Gorreana tea plantation and factory and the Sta. Iria viewpoint, before arriving back at the hotel.

Full Day Jeep Tour Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo 

Meeting point at the hotel Grand Hotel Azores Atlantico (Besaude Hotel Collection) at 9 AM.

The jeep tour starts in Ponta Delgada and continues towards Sete Cidades. It includes stops at various viewpoints and the chance to visit the most beautiful and unknown the most beautiful and unknown places on the west side of the island.

The tour continues with a stop at the Vista do Rei viewpoint, we continue along a dirt road that circles part of the top of the volcanic complex. The top of the volcanic complex, which leads us down into the valley to visit the parish of Sete Cidades.

After admiring the church of São Nicolau, we continue towards the municipality of Lagoa for lunch in a traditional restaurant.

The tour then continues towards Lagoa do Fogo. Before returning to Ponta Delgada, time to catch a glimpse of Lagoa do Fogo, at the top of Pico da Barrosa. Drop-off at the hotel at 5 PM.

Full day Whale Watching and Vila Franca islet 

Meeting point at Picos de Aventura at 8:15 AM.

Discover the magnificent south coast of the island of São Miguel, observe dolphins and/or whales in their natural habitat and visit an exclusive Nature Reserve, the Vila Franca Islet.

The trip is a complete expedition as we get to know the natural habitat of the cetaceans, but also the islet, classified as a Nature Reserve in 1983, rich in biodiversity in the waters and rocks.

O The journey from Vila Franca do Campo to the islet and back is made by an independent boat belonging to the independent boat belonging to the Vila Franca Marina. The activity is carried out in a fiber or semi-rigid boat. Pic-Nic included.

Full Day Trekking Lagoa do Fogo 
 

Pick-up location and time TBA.

The hiking trail starts on a dirt track that climbs through the woods. The trail then continues along a levada (about 2 km) until it reaches a wider area, with steep slopes on both sides to the shore of Lagoa do Fogo.

During the ascent we will have the chance to see Vila Franca do Campo and its islet. A snack stop is made on the shore of the lagoon where you can take some fantastic photographs of the lagoon of São Miguel.

The return to the starting point is via a trail that runs through an area covered in endemic vegetation, flowing into an area of pastureland as we drop in altitude. 

Price: 75 €/ per person 

A maximum of 24 participants can attend. 

Full day Mystic Furnas Kayak & Bikes 

Pick-up location and time TBA.

The group will be split into two, so that one half will be canoeing, while the other will be biking. 

When we start canoeing, we head out to the middle of the lagoon, where we can feel the grandeur of the volcanoes that have shaped our island. We continue our canoeing activity to the opposite shore where we will see a neo-Gothic style chapel built in the 19th century.

Finally, we follow the shore until we return to the starting point next to the fumaroles. The bike tour is aimed at people who want to get to know the caldera where the volcano that gave rise to the Furnas lagoon is located.

The route starts in the caldera area and then follows the dirt road that surrounds the lagoon. We continue our bike ride through the Lombo dos Milhos area, where we can enjoy the landscape and the surrounding pastures.

At around 12 noon, we’ll join the group for lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, we return to Lagoa das Furnas to change activities. Return to Ponta Delgada at 16:30 PM.
